Week 8: Adventures of creepy grandmas and huge completos

Allo! Check out this super handsome picture of Zach. What a stud! For reals, I am going to need to beat girls off with a bat when he gets home. That is off topic. Now to this little missionaries eighth week:
Elder Van Pelt had his first zone conference this week in Temuco and an area 70 attended. Zach was pretty well known at this conference already, he thinks it is because everyone is super excited that they have someone named Elder Van Pelt in the zone.

Elder Van Pelt and Elder Murphy have had a rough week in the area of getting people to listen to their message. He said that left and right, people are telling them "no" or ignoring them. It has gotten them pretty down, but Zach is trying to keep his head high. The only baptism that they had scheduled has backed out of it after they helped him to quit smoking. That hurt Zach knowing that the investigator was denying happiness after what he had felt through the spirit. Walking to the bus that day, he broke down and prayed to Heavenly Father, asking that they would be sent one person to listen to their message. At the end of the night they taught a family who invited them into their home and they challenged them to read the Book of Mormon. Elder Van Pelt and his companion gave each other blessings of comfort and woke up with the "clouds parted". They contacted 17 different people and 7 potential investigators. He said it felt like it went from people saying "no" to listening to them and saying "yes". Zach attributed his success to prayer and hard work, which goes perfect with the quote he sent along, "Do all you can do and when you have done all you can, pray and do more."

The shower in their apartment
Zachs favorite part of the day is his morning shower which is heated by gas. Other than that, it is pretty chilly through out the day. He said he can see his breath when he is outside all times of the day. His Spanish is getting better everyday, and even uses his daily ciesta (a time in the latin culture where everyone stops midday and takes naps) to practice the language further. He says the extra hour daily definitely makes a difference. Elder Van Pelt sure misses his junk food, and is having withdrawals from his fast food. He is trying to buy healthy food at the grocery store on p-day because he has sugar and ham sandwiches every night for dinner. He should know better because Mrs. Taryn Bodine taught him how to make a lot of food in foods class last year. Once I tell her, I think she will be disappointed. His favorite food thus far in the mission has been the completos, which are basically just humongous, giant hot dogs covered in a bunch of different things. His had mayo, guacamole, sauerkraut, and bread. Uh gross. Whatever, he would eat anything.

The highlight of the letter to me this week, seems to be a trend of grumpy old grandmas. He said in his letter that this experience was more creepy to him though. Elder Van Pelt and Elder Murphy were out tracting and stopped at a house where they couldn't find a door. After much searching, Zach yelled "Allo!" (thanks to some information from Matt Anderson who also served in Chile). Anyways, an old grandma came to the window and stared at them for about 30 seconds, just shaking her finger back and forth. She then disintegrated into a pile of dust and was picked up by the roaring wind. Just kidding, but Zach is convinced that this woman has never left her house and just stands in that same spot all day looking creepily out the window because her house has no door.

Sleeping quarters
Well Zach is doing great and really loves the work he is doing. He misses everyone though a lot. Keep the letters coming (he LOVES handwritten letters, they make his day). We really miss him too here at home. My mom won't let anyone touch they soccer shoes he left in the middle of the living room, because it makes it feel like he is still here. She jokes that when he gets home she is going to scold him and tell him to pick up his shoes. This week he was visiting with a member family and heard the first song he has recognized while in Chile, by Enya. In our family, everyone knows that this is a special song because our little niece Tegan would immediately stop crying and fall asleep when we busted out some Enya for her to listen to. So that made Zach a little home sick and actually started crying at the table because of what a fond memory it is. Now he whistles and hums it everywhere he goes, so his companion is probably super sick of Enya. In closing, lets heed to Zachs advice "Do all you can do and when you have done all you can, pray and do more." What a great example!

Hasta luego!

Week 7: Adventures of a snappy grandma and her yappy dogs

Hello fellow Zach lovers! Or as Elder Van Pelt began his letter this week: "Wowwicazowwi!"

This was Elder Van Pelts first week as a certified, out in the field, doors slammed in your face, I don't know your language Missionary and I am not going to lie, I had quite a few laughs at his expense in this letter. I know, I am a mean sister. He let us know that he is NOT living in a hut, being bit by monster insects or drinking soda instead of water (we were told that the water was undrinkable in Chile and that he would be drinking a lot of soda instead). His first area is in Victoria, which is located at the southern most part of Concepcíon. The only things that are noticeably different to him than living in the USA is that there are wood burning stoves in the houses for heat, which make them all smell like campfire, and that he has not seen any McDonalds yet. What a bummer...

He had a few challenges getting to Chile like almost missing his flight and the airline lost his luggage, but he kept a good attitude and on his connecting flight was able to talk with a woman in Spanish named Mary, who he actually gave a Book of Mormon to. He spent his first night in a hotel and woke up not knowing where he was and thought he was here at home in his own bed. There was a 5 hour bus ride to Victoria where he met his trainer, Elder Murphy from California who is the district leader. He has been out for 17 months so he has a lot of experience and understanding for Zach. His roommates are both zone leaders also, so there is a high expectation for him. They wasted no time, went grocery shopping and then straight to teaching. Zach had a hard time understanding and communicating with the people and was able to comprehend about half of what was said, however he was very confident when he bore his testimony to a few different people that day. Familia Sotos, who are converts to the church, heard a message from them and after Zach bore his testimony Hermano Soto prayed for Zach, which had a large impact on him.

Contrary to what I would have thought, Chile is cold, especially in the morning according to Zach. The water in the faucet is also freezing so he has to look forward to his shower for some warm water. He wakes up at 7 AM and goes to bed at 11 PM.

On the fateful day of August 14th he met "the snappy grandma and her yappy dogs". Apparently Zach tried to speak to this snappy grandma in Spanish and she ended up stopping him and telling him that she couldn't understand him and that his Spanish was bad, to which he reacted with not speaking in her home anymore. Good thing his companion is great and kept his spirits up by giving him a hug and telling him everything would be OK. But I found the snappy grandma to be the highlight of the letter. The other highlight of the letter was the story Zach told about him and his companion setting up an appointment with a lady for the next day. When they showed up to the house, the ladies 3 or 4 year old son answered the door. When they asked if they could talk to his mom, he replied saying his mom was hiding in her room. They asked if he would go get her and after about 5 minutes he came back and slammed the door in their faces. Zach found that upsetting, but I was laughing my butt off (I know, again I am the mean sister).

Another day he and Elder Murphy went to a home where the mother was a member but her husband apparently wasn't and HATES gringos. Elder Murphy was talking to the husband and Zach wasn't able to understand most of it, but it sounded mostly like he really didn't like Zach. Oh well, we like him and that is all that matters.  After that while tracting Zach randomly started talking to a 14 year old boy on the street and asked him if he would be interested in hearing their message, he felt that Heavenly Father guided him toward that little guy, so that was pretty cool! They also committed an act of service by helping without asking, a young boy and girl load wood from a truck. From that they were able to teach a lesson to their mom, her daughter and her son-in-law.

One other cool thing that happened this week is that Zach and Elder Murphy were teaching a family who they had been in contact with. I believe the name of the father was Guillermo. Anyways, they had lost their son a few days prior and their hearts were just broken. Elder Van Pelt was able to share his experience with our cousin Jacob, who passed away a couple years ago. He expressed to them that he knew he would be able to see him again because of the Plan of Salvation. Zach said they were very receptive to the lesson, so we will see how that works out.

Well that was all for this week, which I would say sounds pretty productive. Keep Zach in your prayers as he learns this foreign language and searches for those who are ready to hear his message.

Hasta luego!

Week 6: Adventures of the last week of training

Just a quick little post before we get Zachs weekly letter, we got a small email from Elder Van Pelt as he arrived in Chile to let us know he had safely landed and was on his way. He also sent some pictures which I will happily share :)
Elder Van Pelt is super sad to be leaving the CCM as he has made a lot of friends and has been able to feel the spirit so strongly (it also helps that it looks like a resort). He said his testimony has grown so much in the last month in Mexico. Zach emphasized most in his email that we as members of the church need to work harder to help the missionaries in our area find those who are in need of the gospel. If you don't share your testimony, do. If you haven't handed out a Book of Mormon, give some out. We all have friends and family who are not active or have not even been a part of our church, be the light of Christ and invite them to sacrament meeting, dinner with the missionaries, or just share your testimony and plant a seed. We all can do better and share with our brothers and sisters the happiness we enjoy each and every day.

Week 5: Adventures of the future

Hola!

Sorry this weeks post was a little delayed, I was out of town and away from any internet access. I was super excited to get Zachs letter this week because it is his last letter from the Mexico CCM. I know, crazy. That means that he is leaving for Chile this Monday at 8:25 AM, it is an 8-10 hour flight so pray for his safe arrival and guidance as he becomes a full fledged missionary. Phase one, check! Now just less than 23 short months until we see his awesome smile and hear him singing the Beach Boys to us. Of course, that is not how Zach feels. He communicated that it is going by too fast and he wants it to slow down. I cursed him under my breath with a hex when I read that sentence.

Zach had a super spiritual week from what I can tell from his letter. He has crammed in a lot of studying to prepare for his departure to Chile. I guess our dad got Zach a book before he left called "Serve With Honor". He read a chapter that particularly stood out to him on keeping your eyes single to the glory of God. He likened it unto himself, found that it has helped him to more fully focus on his mission, and to keep both eyes fixed on the glory of God.

He received an extra boost this week with a letter from our Grandma Bradford. He has really appreciated the handwritten messages he has received throughout the week, and this one was just as special coming from such a wonderful lady who has been such an incredible influence in our family. She truly does know exactly what to say and when to say it and he really appreciated that this week.

Language wise, Elder Van Pelt has struggled a little bit with his grammar, but knows that if he just keeps studying and doing what he is supposed to, God will prepare a way for him to communicate with the people of Chile. He had an experience in which he saw an elder at the CCM whom he went to high school with and he didn't really get along with. When these thoughts came to mind he thought of his calling as a missionary, walked up to him and shook his hand. The Elder was shocked to see Zach reach out to him, but Zach felt awesome and knew that the gospel of Jesus Christ can help everyone become more like our Savior.

Elder Van Pelt has started to think about some things after his mission, about what he wants to do with his life. He always planned on going to business school and becoming a millionaire, but he is now wanting to dedicate more of his life to the Lord. I have always personally thought that Zach would be an EXCELLENT seminary teacher. It also sounds a little more like the Zach I know, rather the rich businessman (although I wouldn't mind it if he shared some of his money with his awesome big sister).

Zachs spiritual thought for the week if anyone would care to read, is Alma 43:19. It is about Moroni preparing the Nephites to fight for their land and their freedom. He mentioned that it is very important to prepare ourselves spiritually for whatever might come our way. There are some difficult challenges in life that will hit us unexpectedly, but we can all turn to the Lord. Prepare yourselves for a spiritual battle and to clear the way for the Savior to return to the earth.

Anyways Zach loves you all and misses everyone, but is having a blast doing what he truly has always loved, sharing his love for the only true church of God. I will also have Elder Van Pelts new address posted as soon as I have it available.
Hasta luego!
